Patrick Wolf is one of those enigmatic young performers shrouded in fine fashion and is a prophetic leader among his loyal following. Yup, Mr Wolf walks among us and is a pretty impressive wordsmith and performer.

These photos were taken at The Zoo on a night I witnessed not only a fine display of musical talents, but also how loyal his fans are.

The Zoo sits on a corner block in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley. Outside there is a lane that runs parallel to the stage. There is no air-conditioning in the venue, so large windows back open into the lane, sitting outside is a bit like sitting in front of your own personal stereo.

Later in the night I met a friend in the lane who arrived late and couldn’t get in to see the show. Also in the lane were a group of guys singing and not missing a beat to the music flooding from the venue. But the thing is, they were sitting in bushes. Not on the concrete foot path, but in among the city variety of brush that seems to never die. Yes Patrick Wolf is that good you’d lay in a bush just to hear him.

 

Millions of dollars, countless meetings, and outraged energies are thrown into anti-graffiti technologies and cleaning programs around Australia each year just to keep walls a nice concrete grey. Berlin has a lot of graffiti: there are signs of it everywhere. But Berliners realise that they could either waste their money or come up with creative ways to accept the inevitable.

In August of this year, 2009, C and I stayed in an apartment on Torstraße, Mitte. All over buildings, parks and shops there were hundreds of quick tags and throw-ups; some of it good. But what I enjoyed seeing were shop owners and even whole blocks of units dedicating space to allow local artists to take the time and create something beautiful.

Berlin is an amazing city, with some oustanding street art.

 

Vulcana is a name that needs no introduction and her children The Crash Collective can tell a tale without the need of words.

I was invited to take photographs of these acrobatic women; a flying, death defying, nail-biting performance of giant kinetic sculpture, haphazard sounds all for the juice of an orange.

When I juice my oranges I like to play it safe – a moulded plastic juicing device and container to catch the extracted juice. Simple, right? Well, there is simple and then there is The Crash Collective way.

Juice as the name suggests takes the ordinary task of juicing an orange, mixes it up with some very talented circus performers, a well executed soundscape and an all-women powered Rube Goldberg machine to deliver sweet nectar.

 

Being our second time in Spain, and armed with better Español I felt more comfortable to explore the areas off the tourist maps. As usual with my holiday photos I managed to snap off a bunch of nice street art shots.

I found Granada to be an amazing city for street art: the amount of small out of sight streets, stairs and alleys make it the perfect canvas for artists. Not surprisingly there is a fair amount of political graffiti (Granada is a univeristy town), but overall I found it difficult to tell the commissioned pieces from the illegal pieces – the quality of work is impressive.

Valencia also provided us with a nice selection of street art, although the work was confined to one area of the city, an area we only discovered on our last evening. So without much light left in the day we captured some good quality work, albeit slightly different and more abstract than those pieces in Granada.

 

Their music, like the plant has lots of jagged synthy edges, organic vocals and dark atmospheric beats. On stage Heidi is the earth, while Anthony the heat, a combination that allows their music to grow, bloom and flower.
